This war drama depicts one of the biggest events of the American Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg. The massive three-day conflict begins as Confederate General Robert E. Lee (Martin Sheen) presses his troops north into Pennsylvania, leading to confrontations with Union forces, including the regiment of Colonel Joshua Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels). Rambling and overblown, the film has plenty of dramatic intensity – how couldn't it? – but fails to live up to its subject. Stellar cast do their best, but too many instances of grandstanding, and too much deference bordering on glorification of the southern cause, make it a misleading historical account. A better film would've concentrated more on the experiences of the foot soldiers, rather than the gestures and actions of the grand players and generals on the battlefield.

A deep and serious movie for serious history buffs. It would take a lot of dedication for a regular person to get through the 3+ hours but people like me hated to see the movie end. Excellent, reverent acting. Great costumes. Top notch writing. I could complain about some small things like the pacing and make up but overall this is a masterpiece.

Stunning movie. Is it perfect? No. Is any historical movie? No. Performances are stellar, cinematography is stellar. It’s as beautifully made as you could hope for when it come to actual events vs film adaptation. The lack of gore is a notable omission, but this is one of America’s greatest moments that deserves to be celebrated and remembered. PG and lack of gore makes this film accessible, and that is good.

فلم جميل و اداء قوي من الممثلين اخراج ممتاز و تصوير رائع و موسيقى جميلة لكن سرد القصة حسيت ان منحاز للجنوبين شوية مطلعينهم وهم نبلاء و يخافون الرب وهم بالاساس دا يقاتلون الشمال لان صار قرار بالغاء العبودية يعني شلون شاف هاي الصورة الكاتب و المخرج ما اعرف ايضا الازياء كانت رائعه
