There is a certain solemnity in its costume design and art direction, but as a biopic it barely scratches the surface and lacks narrative depth in its fable about the flamboyant monarch. [Full review in Spanish]

A much better film than I actually expected, after hearing some negative opinions on it. Of course this movie is style over substance, because in many ways this is exactly how Marie Antoinette and the French court of Versailles lived, all style and very little substance. In many ways the true star of the film is Versailles itself. And what a palatial supernova it is! So much wall to wall beauty and decadence is hard to imagine when reading the history books, but here Sophia Coppola has brought it vividly to the screen. The entire thing feels almost dreamlike, a strange gilded cage for its willing prisoners. Don't watch this film as a biopic of the famous French queen, enjoy it for what it is, a glimpse of Versailles; the most extreme expression of style over substance the world has ever seen.

Sofia Coppola knows more about making movies than I will ever dream to know, but why are there converse sneakers in 1770's France? If you want to make a period piece, then make a period piece, but I am not sure that's what she wanted and it just created this odd aesthetic and feel. It's not bad, it's just weird. Same thing with the modern music being used. Strange aesthetic for an otherwise good film.

this movie seems to be heavily misunderstood. Coppola is not trying to reproduce the story of an overplayed historical drama, instead she uses it as a canvas for her own aesthetic. This movie is not here to tell us a story weve heard a million times, its here to make us feel something, for what it lacks in narrative depth it makes up for in pure beauty.
