See more Steve S @RT32687682 11/23/2014 ***Due to the recent RT changes that have basically ruined my past reviews, I am mostly only giving a rating rather than a full review.*** See more 04/15/2012 Sophia Loren delights in this period romantic comedy of a banished princess who after scandalous adventures gets accepted back to court to marry a prince after falling for American millionaire John Gavin. Gavin is so handsome and awkward and wooden in this film that he reminded me of Mitt Romney. Loren is delicious at there is ample support from Maurice Chevalier and Isable Jeans as her parents. Angela Lansbury is also great in another of her stock evil bitch roles. Exteriors are beautifully photographed in Vienna. See more 02/18/2012 I'm giving this high marks despite the sometimes cliché script because of so many things. For starters it is my favourite Sophia Loren film and it is for those who love fun, innocent trifles about Americans going to European countries with monarchies and doing zany things. The costumes, sets, lighting and postcard beautiful photography are largely down to the legendary George Hoyningen-Huene and were executed by Ella Bei of the Knize fashion house. These costumes are unrivalled in detail and beauty and seeing some of them on the flawless and quintessential hourglass figure of Sophia Loren is dazzling. Angela Lansbury and Isabel Jeans are magnificent and of course Chevalier. Once again it is my most favourite Sophia film and in my top ten so it has a very special place in my heart. See more 07/25/2011 Really Fun, full of Mischief ala Sophia Loren See more 12/16/2010 One of those movies that under different titles are aired in the afternoons by lazy networks, because of which I never remember I've seen this movie 7 times already until the opening credits are over. Sophia Loren is charming enough, John Gavin is cute enough, and I loves me some Angela Lansbury as an aristocratic bitch with tits (Angela Lansbury is always awesome when her girls are featured prominently, if you don't believe me, go see Gaslight, there's a reason she got an Oscar for that little dà (C)but!). So on to the bad stuff: the plot is so thin that it shrinks away to nothing about halfway through, and no amount of Loren flirtation or Gavin smoulder can fix that and Lansbury isn't in it enough. Considering the first movie version made of the play was such an enormous flop, maybe they should have learned their lesson. See more Read all reviews
