In this British drama based on the novel by E.M. Forster, Lucy Honeychurch, a young Englishwoman, is touring Italy with her older cousin. At a hotel in Florence, Lucy meets the charming and free-spirited George Emerson. Although intrigued by George, once she's back in England Lucy ponders settling down with the wealthy, staid Cecil Vyse. When George reappears in her life, Lucy must decide between him and Cecil.

'There's only one thing impossible, and that's to love and to part.' Just a lavish, wonderful and eminently likeable film. That's about it: not splashy, informative or life-changing, but the movie couldn't be improved by swapping out a single frame. Up until Harry Potter, with which it shares at least two major actors, this was perhaps the greatest British cast ever committed to screen. Lucy Honeychurch may also be one of the grandest names ever heard of. It was a pleasure to see her views on love challenged until she, REO Speedwagon style, couldn't fight the feeling any longer, with plenty of nudging from Denholm Elliott's Mr. Emerson: may we all be granted a parent as supportive as him amidst our own romantic travails.

Great period piece, great acting, great soundtrack. On the other hand, the book is probably a lot more interesting, the dialogue is very slow and boring. The plot comes off very simple and I doubt the book had a simple plot. It's a very restrained romance and I doubt fans of romance would like that. It's more about the hard truths of relationships and less about lust. I would watch again but I can imagine why it would turn people off as the Edwardian lifestyle comes off as very slow and boring in this movie.

So many characters with boring names, most of the time I just had to take a guess as to who they were talking about, as well as love interests that leave you hoping the protagonist just goes to Athens by herself like she planed, if I wrote this, the ending would be so much different, dare I say better. Helena did fantastic though, along with Maggie Smith and Rupert Graves. 6/10

I love love this movie which I perhaps have watched too many times such that you begin to see wrinkles. But, it may well be me, Julian Sands is miscast, can't act and destroys his part of the movie as unutterable Dead Wood. He ruined perfection.
