It skitters and jumps, shivers and boot-scoots, never, ever sitting still. You could say it's like "Blow," on well, blow. But there's a breezy sunniness to this film, which looks like a faded snapshot reclaimed from an '80s photo album.

One assumes that Cruise got this film made, yet he's a terrible fit for the role: he's always done his best work portraying smart, insightful characters in dramatic stories, but Seal was a yahoo whose sorry escapades are played here for cynical laughs.

Absolutely brilliant! Very well written and adapted for screen. Very good cinematography. Frantic pace. Tom Cruise brings the essential controlled chaos and swagger, no one would have done it better. Gripping, tense and very suspenseful. Lots of hammer down action, drama galore, emotion, drama, intrigue and devil - may - care moments. Highly entertaining and riveting, worth watching a couple of times, lots happening here

American Made is southern-fried Scorsese Lite, a gumbo of decadent deviance masking over a sharp spice of potentially fatal risks. Sophomore feature screenwriter Gary Spinelli combed over the wild Barry Seal story and crafted a narrative that is both loosey-goosey with groovy comedy and still honest with its depravity and threat levels. Tweaking the Scorsese template, director Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith and The Bourne Identity) brings his kinetic energy to make things bouncy and bright, shooting much of the Central American settings right in Medellin, Columbia with Oscar-nominated City of God cinematography Cesar Charlone. Colors and contours pop all over this sunny, sweat-soaked affair.

I saw it years ago and checked it out again. I've always liked Cruise but not his religious ideas so much. It's a good movie that's very loosely based on true events. It's worth your time.
