Atrabilious is a bafflingly bad movie that feels more like a rough first-time filmmaking experiment than a finished feature, which makes the involvement of Whoopi Goldberg even more confusing. The film attempts to center on grief and the mystery surrounding a son’s death, but that premise is buried under bizarre dialogue, incoherent themes, and strange detours that never connect. The screenplay is a mess, filled with awkward conversations about past lives, identity, and symbolism that come off as unintentionally ridiculous rather than meaningful. Nothing builds naturally, and the story never finds momentum or clarity. Scenes drag on without purpose, making the film exhausting to sit through. Even the cast can’t save it. Performances are weighed down by poor writing and unfocused direction, leaving the entire film feeling amateurish and unfinished. Atrabilious is confusing, dull, and frustrating—an easy skip and a movie that’s hard to finish, let alone recommend.
