Critics Consensus

A startlingly assured feature debut from director Kane Parsons, Backrooms bends the liminal spaces that have haunted the internet for years into a horror film that's as mesmerizing as it is terrifying.

Parsons’s film is a dynamic WTF spellbinder that isn’t interested in providing straightforward answers. It doesn’t want to make the viewer comfortable. That’s not on the agenda. Go to Full Review
Kim Newman Sight & Sound 2d
The young director’s feature-length version of his YouTube shorts stays true to its creepypasta origins, turning a wasteland of cheap furniture into an infinite hellscape that entraps the viewer along with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve. Go to Full Review
Kyle Smith Wall Street Journal 2d
The movie’s puzzle-palace look and its boldly consistent color scheme conjure up a deep-in-the-bones unease that much more experienced directors rarely manage to create. “Backrooms” may not be a fully explained wonder but it’s well worth the wander. Go to Full Review

In truth this is a story that’s best felt rather than explained, and Parsons does admirably to leave you with a queasy sense of dread. Go to Full Review

Agonisingly tense from the first scene to the batshit insane climax, Backrooms continues 2026’s run of formidable horror films and adaptations, proving to be one of the year’s most unsettling offerings so far. Go to Full Review

This is a film that executes its premise remarkably well, creating a gripping big-screen experience, though it never quite develops characters capable of giving real weight to its context. Go to Full Review

talieeya d 21m Dope!!!! Can’t wait for the sequel!!! See more Sven 31m Backrooms is a fantastic horror film that captures the unsettling feeling of liminal spaces perfectly. Rather than relying on constant jump scares, it builds tension through eerie environments, isolation, and the fear of the unknown. The atmosphere is incredibly effective, making ordinary empty spaces feel deeply unsettling. If you're a fan of psychological horror or liminal-space concepts, Backrooms is definitely worth watching. See more EliseW 40m Backrooms feels impossible to describe. I went in cold. I'd heard of "backrooms" but I've never seen the series or absorbed the lore. When I left, I wasn't even sure I'd seen a horror film. A day or so later, and I'm like, yeah it's a horror film. Backrooms has many strengths - the practical sets and effects, the strong lead performances, the hybrid cinematography. Gonna be a honest, may have triggered a depressive spiral I really didn't want. Right now, there are a thousand takes from Backrooms aficionados and uninitiated alike. Ignore it until you've seen it. Be prepared for a slow burn, ambient sound, and many moments not unlike that disorienting feeling when you leave the dentist and don't know which way you came in. See more poo butt 1h No plot to the storyline whatsoever. The ending was so stupid. The movie made no sense. Waste of time See more Cassandra 1h Started off ok, but ultimately made no sense. Wasnt a horror movie, at all. Please dont waste your time or money! See more Bryan Davis 1h I didn't like the concept of backrooms. It seems like the movie is about a man who is drowning in misery from all his failures and setbacks in life. He doesn't take accountability while killing those around him. Those he kill seems to be stuck in a reality with him(the backrooms). Meanwhile he's weirdly being observed by scientist See more Read all reviews
