Lt. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) is a weapons officer aboard the destroyer USS John Paul Jones, while his older brother, Stone (Alexander Skarsgård), is the commanding officer of the USS Sampson. Unknown to Alex, Stone or the rest of the U.S. Navy, alien invaders have arrived on Earth with plans to steal Earth's resources. When a confrontation with the invaders knocks out the Navy's radar capability, American and Japanese forces must work together to find a way to save the planet.

Critics Consensus

It may offer energetic escapism for less demanding filmgoers, but Battleship is too loud, poorly written, and formulaic to justify its expense -- and a lot less fun than its source material.

Riggins and Landry in the Navy, Peter Berg Does Michael Bay, Transformers-esque, Not Really Battleship; any of those titles are just as fitting if not more so than Battleship.

Some people will tell you that Battleship is a bad film. And they will be right. But it is still a better film than a lot of other action and effects-dominated movies out there. Especially ones based on toy franchises.

Underneath the bombastic veneer of grinding metal, explosions, and destruction lies a corny and often times ridiculous story that can’t be saved by the fancy coat of CGI paint.

This might be corny but it’s fun. A complete screw up who I’d charge with everything in the USMCJ for well everything, finds the depth, in battle, to do the right thing. Having been in sticky situations, I’ve had screwups turn into good soldiers under the stress of battle

Just can't comprehend the poor ratings on this one, literally one of my favorite movies - I watch again it every 3-4 years. No, it's not meant to be deep or profound, but it's really satisfying action and comradery with good comedic rapport between the characters (Tadanobu Asano's character in particular was great).

It’s cheesy and corny, nothing to think about, there are about 104729273 plot holes, but if you just watch it without thinking about those things you may enjoy it.

Pretty good sci-fi movie with lots of action, better than average effects for 2012 and a decent cast easy to identify with. Some of the things in this movie are not really consistent with the laws of physics as we know them.

Synopsis
