This movie rarely looks believable in telling a trite comedy/drama story of a depressed man whose life changes after he works in a hospital ward for terminally ill patients. The film drags with fake-looking endings, including two mid-credits scenes. Go to Full Review

May May 17 The first person who called it prose was an absolute genius. It’s a fluid prose poem, like a quiet river of time flowing onward. It doesn’t try to excavate the deeply buried agony and grief at the riverbed instead, the audience follows Zhang Xiaobing, the observer and recorder, to experience the flow of life itself. What’s especially rare is the ensemble portrayal. With just a few strokes, it creates five groups and thirteen distinct characters. Every one of them feels vivid and unmistakable, each carrying their own river of life, only briefly intersecting within this No.10 hospital wards. It touches on the most familiar themes in Chinese family life — family of origin, love, and kinship. I could understand and empathize with every single story, which is why I loved it so much. Because the opposite of death is simply too beautiful. See more Read all reviews
