Set against the twinkling lights of West Hollywood, Breaking Fast is a romantic comedy that follows Mo, a practicing Muslim still reeling from heartbreak. When an All- American guy named Kal offers to join him in his nightly Iftars -- the traditional meal eaten by Muslims during Ramadan -- meal after meal, the two start to discover they have more in common than meets the eye.

As in most rom-coms, it's not if the couple will get together but how. Still, Mosallam's incisive and heartfelt, if occasionally on-the-nose, approach to matters of love, religion, family and culture sets the film apart.

A solid rom-com with a wealthy man falling in love in a high-gloss We-Ho world. Its discussions of Islam place it a cut above the usual romantic schmaltz, but it's still fluffy happily-ever-after rose-tinted idealism.

I love it, but it was...mediocre. Mo and Kal are theoretically saying the right things to get together but have no chemistry. They're just awkward and not in the charming 'I've got a crush' way - in the 'you look genuinely uncomfortable with this man' way. The conflict COULD work - Mo does have a character flaw that could create drama and carry a conflict. But it doesn't escalate naturally at all. They're not bad actors - the first opening scene between him and Hassan feels plenty natural, which makes it harder to watch everything else fall flat. .....but. I must love it anyway because there is 0, and I mean, ZERO practicing Muslim rep anywhere, so no matter how forced it is, a win is a win. Or at least a first step, as the equivalent of a terrible Christian Hallmark movie,

Started as a story highlighting the x-section of Islam and queerness. It quickly down-spiraled into a story of a care-free, fun-loving white savior, whose name is literally indicating he's Superman and depicted as the man of the town in West Hollywood, saving the day for a Muslim gay man whose heart was broken by another Muslim man and the religion's expectations. Nothing more than a Hollywood cliché.
