In an alternate present day, humans, orcs, elves and fairies have been coexisting since the beginning of time. Two police officers, one a human, the other an orc, embark on a routine night patrol that will alter the future of their world as they know it. Battling both their own personal differences and an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a young female elf and a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which, in the wrong hands, could destroy everything.

Perhaps expecting Bright to ask pertinent questions or think beyond its "Orc is the New Black" conceit was too much. As such, the limited world-building is just window-dressing for a basic survive-the-night thriller that putters along on toxic fumes

It has a great premise, but execution is extraordinarily clumsy. It is far from the worst film of the year as many have said, but it isn't a magnificent, enlightened, and socially conscious piece of cinema it pretends to be either.

Until we get a Shadowrun Movie, this is it. There are better LA crime and social commentary movies, but more worse. Will Smith is entertaining.

The 'professional' review score is really surprising to me. I know we're supposed to hate Will Smith now, and honestly, I'm not much of a fan these days...but that does not negate the quality he brings to each role. Yes, the movie is trying to intertwine too many concepts at once, and yes, it's only mediocre at parts of that endeavor. At its core, though, is an action-packed, and within the scope of the world that's been built, plausible story of a couple of cops getting in the middle of a situation that's (possibly) bigger than they can handle. It all plays well on-screen. It's fun to watch, interesting, a novel world of the magic and the mundane meshed together, and a generally exciting buddy, but not buddy cop film. I only wish it had gotten a sequel to flesh out more of the story, the prophesy, and the broader context of the world in which the characters live.

Bright (2017) This movie is completely different from anything I've ever watched on Netflix. The premise of combining fairy tales with the real world is completely crazy, but the film manages to deliver some great moments of fun.
