Some family films are perfectly decent entertainments for their intended audience, no more no less. It is into this category that we can slot Buffalo Kids. It’s amiable and rattles along nicely enough without ever really surprising anyone.

Buffalo Kids is a formulaic but delightful animated film about lost orphans chased by bandits in California in 1886. This Wild West story stands out for having forward-thinking and empathetic portrayals of a wheelchair-using child and Native Americans.

A beautiful story with much-needed positive Native American representation! My only gripe is the safety messaging—the disclaimer that 'wildlife is dangerous' only appears during the credits. It’s a bit of a missed opportunity for a teaching moment during the actual movie, especially for younger viewers.
