What to Know

Critics Consensus

With plenty of pulpy action, a pleasantly retro vibe, and a handful of fine performances, Captain America is solidly old-fashioned blockbuster entertainment.

“Captain America: The First Avenger” is an old-fashioned adventure with modern digital effects, and one of the most confident and reliable entries in the Marvel Universe. It really is a pleasure to return to this film. [Full review in Spanish]. Go to Full Review

Jose F. @lowazucar 1d An overall enjoyable action film. However there was much that was unexplored about the characters and their motivation. Steve and Peggy's relationship felt rushed. The color grading was not enjoyable to watch. See more Benjamin W. @Code70 4d While I think this movie is good, I can’t say I really say what a lot of others see in it. It does a good job of presenting Steve as this pure-hearted, likable character, and there’s some great world building, but I’ve always found it somewhat conventional in comparison to a lot of other MCU films, and Red Skull and the plotline involving him has never been terribly interesting to me. It’s a skillfully made film, and I appreciate what it did and the foundation it built for the MCU, but I’d be lying if I acted like I think this is as GREAT as so many people do. See more Ray C 5d (Road to Doomsday pt. 5) The original Captain America kind of kicks ass. Of all the Phase One movies, this was the one I remembered the least—and I’d completely forgotten that Tommy Lee Jones and Stanley Tucci were even in it. The First Avenger is also just a really well-done origin story. It’s basically impossible to imagine anyone other than Chris Evans in the role, and he’s excellent here. Beyond that, it works as both a period piece and a war movie, which makes it feel genuinely unique within the MCU. There really isn’t another Marvel film quite like it, and I appreciate it for that. It’s also easily the most action-packed entry so far, and Hugo Weaving is solid as Red Skull. The final battle is a bit weak and holds it back slightly, but overall, it’s definitely one of the best films of Phase One. See more Declan D. @filmbuffkid Jan 19 Awesome origin to the MCU, I recommend this to fans of superhero films and war films. See more Benjamin R @bgrishappy Jan 17 Great movie to start the MCU! See more John H @Joho16 Jan 11 Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell stand out in this one and even Tommy Lee Jones as Colonel Phillips is excellent. Fun start to the Captain America story.
