This is Steven Spielberg at his best. A true story about a teenage con artist forging checks and impersonating professionals should not be this entertaining, but Spielberg turns it into a funny, suspenseful, and surprisingly emotional true-crime film. Leonardo DiCaprio is excellent as Frank Abagnale Jr., capturing his intelligence, charm, arrogance, and loneliness. Tom Hanks is just as strong as FBI agent Carl Hanratty, bringing patience, determination, and humanity to the chase. Their cat-and-mouse relationship works because neither man is treated as a simple hero or villain, and their growing respect gives the story real depth. Christopher Walken adds warmth and heartbreak as Frank’s father, while the pacing keeps the movie moving beautifully through each scam, escape, and near-capture. Catch Me If You Can is one of Spielberg’s most enjoyable films: stylish, emotional, perfectly cast, and still one of the best true-crime stories brought to the screen.
