Nick O'Brien is the hard-drinking leader of the Regulators, an elite unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Ray Merrimen is the recently paroled leader of the Outlaws, a gang of ex-military men who use their expertise and tactical skills to evade the law. O'Brien, Merrimen and their crews soon find themselves on a direct collision course as the criminals hatch an elaborate plan for a seemingly impossible heist -- the city's Federal Reserve Bank.

Butler and Schreiber deliver commanding performances. They are men who could explode at any moment, at work or at home. That nonstop ticking beneath their calm exteriors fills the film with a gripping tension.

Den of Thieves desperately wants to be Heat or The Killer when it grows up. Instead it's a daft, distant, drunken cousin to those pictures, but if you studiously avoid thinking about it, you can at least enjoy its moronic antics.

It's one thing for the bad guys to shoot one another, but when cops place dozens of innocent people in the middle of an automatic gun battle it feels gratuitous even for a movie like this.

Top 5 Heist/Bank Robber movies. Not better than Heat, Inside Man, or the Town but it is along side those movies when you are in the mood to watch a heist movie

Den of Thieves is just a CHEAP remake of Heat (1995). The original Heat 1995 is literally ten times better than Den of Thieves 2018.

Gerard Butler (as usual) grabs this role and squeezes it dry. Gritty, raunchy style of LA dirty: "it's just street theater" (he tells his wife as she leaves him). While true that it's in the same genre of "Heat" but...it has its own plot twists that differentiate it from the other "typical" bank heist flicks. The great cast helps to keep everything moving; it's never boring. Easily watchable at least twice.

I'd say about 60% of the negative audience reviews for this film are angry that it's similar to Heat in some ways, because they apparently don't realize that this is how genres work. The other 40% are deeply offended that the movie features a lot of alpha males. So yeah... I just went ahead and disregarded those opinions and watch it anyway. Long story short, it's a solid crime drama with a decent amount of action. It looks good and it's very well acted.
