Deep in the Appalachian Mountains, Charlie (Billy Bob Thornton) controls his family and his meth-dealing business with his fists. When his young son Jacob (Hopper Penn) meets the girl of his dreams, desperately wanting to escape the life he is expected to lead and freeing himself from the clutches of his cruel father and long-suffering mother (Robin Wright), he is forced to go head-to-head with the terrifying man who will stop at nothing to ensure loyalty from all of those around him.

With terrific Appalachian ambience and moments of carefully constructed action, Devil’s Peak is not a terrible movie, but in the bigger picture, it’s not a particularly memorable one, either.

The novelty of real-life mother-and-son duo Robin Wright and Hopper Penn portraying a mother and a son in Devil's Peak is not enough reason to watch this dreadful crime drama with a putrid plot and subpar acting. Almost nothing in this flop is believable.

It’s simply okay. The cast makes it focused enough and interesting enough to want to see how it ends, which isn’t half bad.

Spoilers: A showcase for Robin Wright, her son Hopper Penn, also Sean Penn's son, and Billy Bob Thornton and Jacky Earl Haley. And a redo of sorts of 1986's "At Close Range," when Sean was the son of Chris Walken, who, like here, was a low-life career crime boss, with Sean, like Hopper here, the son who wanted to break from his murdering criminal father, Billy Bob here. Hopper and Sean each was in love with a girl and wanted to run with her. This one has enough action to keep you in suspense and enough good acting to make the ride worthwhile. While Hopper was sympathetic with seemingly good instincts, puppy dog eyes only gets you so far. His take was workmanlike but, as you expect, he has a long way to go before he acts as well as Sean or Billy Bob. When you have Thornton, Wright and Haley, you have ingredients for something good. Not a waste of time but no crime activity even illustrated and other plot holes. Hey, every go isn't "Oppenheimer."
