Struggling circus owner Max Medici enlists a former star and his two children to care for Dumbo, a baby elephant born with oversized ears. When the family discovers that the animal can fly, it soon becomes the main attraction -- bringing in huge audiences and revitalizing the run-down circus. Expect to be impressed by the cinematography (Ben Davis), costumes (Colleen Atwood), production design (Rick Heinrichs), music (Danny Elfman) and the animation that created the adorable Dumbo with those large watery eyes that sparkle in the wild.

The story is unique, but it's completely flippant in regards to the original. Pink elephants on parade being literal soap bubbles, instead of Dumbo being drunk? Come on! We live in a time where cannabis legalization is overwhelmingly popular. I THINK kids (and pearl-clutching adults) can handle the concept of alcohol intoxication. Hell, this could have been a prime opportunity for a lesson on the merits of moderation rather than over-indulgence. God knows, in the era of a gold-painted oval-office, we NEED lessons on moderation. Complete fail in that, in my opinion. Instead, they went with a watered down version of the original, more akin to the fluff of the feather to which Dumbo himself so desperately clung.

I always hear that this is the worst of the live-action Disney remakes, but how can that be true when Snow White exists? This movie has incredible production design and visuals and the film expands the story a little bit, but not to the point of changing everything. I actually enjoyed the whole "Dreamland" portion in the second half and thought that was a brilliant way to explore the world further. Yes, the original animated film will always be better, but this one works well as a live-action translation.
