Alan R @Zillagod Jan 7 Started watching this because I knew the cast so well and they were so young. I didn’t know Matthau was ever that young. But I could not take my eyes off it. The performances, particularly Griffith who jumps off the screen, are superb. The direction and cinematography are excellent. But it’s the story that is the most stunning. I kept thinking it was amazing how ahead of its time it is with the themes of demagoguery and manipulation of the uneducated, unthinking masses. The use of media manipulation and the dangerous mixture of entertainment and politics are all more relevant today than ever. I even think I heard Rhodes proclaim himself "an influencer." But by the end I realized this was not so much ahead of its time; it’s apparently relevant for all times. Seeing Andy Griffith as a grungy musician from the South banging out blues-inspired music goes against the clean-cut image I've had of the actor for all these decades.
