Critics Consensus

Ferdinand's colorful update on a classic tale doesn't go anywhere unexpected, but its timeless themes -- and John Cena's engaging voice work in the title role -- make for family-friendly fun.

Not that this Ferdinand was for me. It's too obnoxious, too self-involved, the hyperactive antics of pretty much every member of the supporting cast driving me bonkers. Go to Full Review

This year seems perfectly primed for the classic story of a bull who refuses to fight. Well, the message may be needed, but in Ferdinand, the mediocre execution suppresses any power those ideas may have had. Go to Full Review

Frequently buries the lovely tale under the hyperactive excesses required to stretch this to feature length. Go to Full Review

Vinicius M @Vini_Monteiro 10h Ferdinand attempts to stretch a classic short story into a feature film, resulting in a movie with a huge heart but noticeable flaws. Visually, it features warm, colorful Spanish landscapes, though the animation style feels slightly safe and generic compared to industry peers. The film's greatest triumph is John Cena's voice acting; his genuine vulnerability perfectly grounds Ferdinand's journey of self-acceptance and non-violence. Unfortunately, the movie struggles to justify its feature-length runtime. The pacing severely drags in the second act, padded with annoying, corporate-feeling side characters (like Lupe the goat and the hedgehogs) and lazy slapstick humor, most notably a cringey dance battle. It also suffers from an indecisive tone, awkwardly balancing terrifying slaughterhouse scenes with sanitized bullfighting. Ultimately, it’s an average, commercialized film saved by its sweet protagonist and timeless message. John Cena is amazing in the role of the main character, the cast is incredible, the story is magnificent and the comedy is brilliant. Although, its a bit too cartoony at times. I'd recommend it.
