Damien Chazelle is an enthusiastic, visually expressive filmmaker with practically nothing of interest to say about the human experience. Go to Full Review

First Man doesn't just dwell on its subject's achievements. It takes a beat to glance into Armstrong's personal motivations and vulnerabilities while using technical mastery to tell an engrossing true-life story. Go to Full Review
Ryan Gilbey New Statesman 01/26/2019
In those sequences when Armstrong is heading for the stars, the approach is so immersive on a sensory level -- cacophonous sound design, juddering cinematography verging on the abstract -- that it almost compensates for the void at the film's core. Go to Full Review

First Man is extravagant filmmaking it every way. The craft is sharp. The story is surprising. The emotion is real. Go to Full Review

Subsequently, we also see how Armstrong looks to the moon for escapism. Behind First Man is a captivating look at grief. Go to Full Review

The cinematography in the film is fantastic and for his first film not about music, Chazelle gets the best score of any of his films from composer Justin Hurwitz, one that might just be my favorite score of the year so far Go to Full Review

Haseeb A @RT14484299 3d Did not know this was a Damien Chazelle film going in and honestly that made it hit even harder when I saw his name in the credits. It does not feel like the polished, award bait space drama you might expect. It feels raw and intimate and deeply personal. The family drama at the centre of it is everything. Ryan Gosling plays Neil Armstrong with this quiet restraint that could easily read as cold but actually just feels real, and the domestic weight of what these astronauts and their families carried comes through in every scene. The editing inside the ships is something else entirely. It is chaotic and claustrophobic and genuinely puts you in the headspace of what these men must have actually felt strapped into a metal capsule being launched into space. Claire Foy is exceptional throughout. Knew her from The Crown but this is a completely different register, and she absolutely delivers. See more Stephen C @bob25009 3d The worldwide gross is $105,700,000.00 over a net budget of $59,000,000.00. See more Daniel M @MazzaQuePasa Mar 3 It wasn’t a bad movie,it just felt bland throughout the film. When it got good, it got really good, but those intense moments never lasted. It was too dark and grim for my liking. I did respect the directing of the film, it get very real and raw which I appreciated. See more Bill B @billbird2111 Feb 26 I have watched this movie once. No desire to see it again. However, upon watching a clip on YouTube I was reminded just how depressing this movie really was. Forget about the flag planting. It would not have improved upon the sadness I felt when I saw this. The moon landing was a crowing achievement for America. It's too bad that this movie does not reflect upon that. I don't think Neil Armstrong or Buzz Aldrin were brutally depressed when they landed and walked on the moon. Yet, this movie would have you believe that. This is one of the biggest problems with it, in my opinion. See more Dilyana T @Dilyana Feb 17 Clearly, the over-exploited theme of the first man on the Moon recreated again has to bring a new perspective and the documentary is not its main focus. The first question I asked myself was why Ryan Gosling? It makes me think Neil Armstrong's personality was the director's contribution to the topic. But is it possible that Neil Armstrong had that prince-like blue-eyed, carefree look of Barbie’s partner? Could he be that pathetic, unemotional, self-centered quasi astronaut who can only screen-capture with his eyes the Moon, Earth, and his own footprints in the moon sand, and recite a line he had written in advance? See more Emb3rGamer66 T @Emb3r.G Jan 26 This movie taught me Neil Armstrong was part of the Gemini Program during the First Space Docking, I did enjoy that scene of the Gemini 8 Disaster See more Read all reviews
