Life is full of people who overthink the first step. Forrest Gump is not one of them. As someone who laces up and runs myself, watching this man start jogging one afternoon and not stop for three years felt less like fiction and more like a calling. The running in this film is not a metaphor you have to decode. It just is. Tom Hanks narrates the whole thing in a voice that sounds like it has never been in a hurry in its life, and somehow that makes every word land harder than it should. You stop noticing he is acting somewhere around the first twenty minutes, and then you never get him back. The moment little Forrest walks into frame and Forrest figures out what he is looking at might be the most quietly devastating, wholesome thing I have ever watched. This film earns everything it takes from you. It is inspirational in the way only the best films manage, without once feeling like it is trying to be. Run, do not walk.
