The film brings the age-old question of theodicy to a real-life lawsuit and places God in the defendant's seat. It is a question that can only lead to a suspended judgment from the beginning, but it is valuable just to look at the existence of God from various angles. It may be a limitation of the comedy genre, but the rough treatment of each religion's aspects feels somewhat unpleasant. We stumbled upon it by accident on YouTube and it was so engaging we watched it all the way through. Recommend it. See more dustin d @RT12543299 04/15/2020 Frank vs. God is a religious film, despite the (few) accusations of Evangelical Christians against it (this movie wasn't released with much fanfare). The message, though, may confuse some as it's both nondenominational and respectful of atheists' worldview. I see these as the movie's strengths, along with a good script, humor and fine acting (particularly a nuanced performance from Ever Carradine as Rachel Levin, great-great granddaughter of evangelical author Beverly Carradine, and granddaughter of David Carradine, who played Jim Casy, a preacher who lost his faith in The Grapes of Wrath--I like to think both these movies take place in the same cinematic universe, and Rachel is Casy's granddaughter). Unlike most religious films, which blatantly preach to the choir, like God's Not Dead, another movie in which God is "put on trial" released just two months prior to Frank vs. God, this movie treats both atheists and religious leaders charitably, and accurately, if simplistically, depicts their views. God's Not Dead and its ilk are shoddy and the scripts are indistinguishable from a Chick tract. The movie's flippant and occasionally hilarious tone, as well as the subject matter, is probably what upsets Evangelicals, who clearly didn't get the point. While David Frank is never converted, as would be the character arc in a lesser religious film, he does come to a sort of peace with God and has a religious experience in a sense, which is why I don't understand the Evangelical reaction to the film. A legitimate criticism of the film is its cartoonish special effects. However, as the filmmakers appeared to be working on a relatively low budget, and this isn't explicitly a "special effects film," some leniency is warranted. Frank vs. God is funny and entertaining and should be seen by a wider audience.
