Golden Boy attempts to explore heavy themes like addiction, identity, and complicated relationships, but the execution feels uneven and underdeveloped. While the subject matter itself is relevant and meaningful, the screenplay struggles to connect its emotional beats into a cohesive story. Instead of building depth, the film moves from one intense moment to another without proper development, leaving the narrative feeling fragmented. The direction lacks refinement, with pacing and staging that make the film feel smaller than it aims to be. Performances, particularly from the lead, come across as overly intense and at times distracting, making it difficult to fully invest in the character. Ultimately, Golden Boy feels disjointed and subpar, failing to turn strong themes into a compelling cinematic experience, and it lacks the emotional payoff needed to justify its ambition.
