But Jessica Rothe keeps this film afloat with a dynamic performance rarely seen in this genre. She really gets to do a bit of everything here, showcasing not only her ScreamQueen abilities and comedic timing, but also some serious emotional chops with one scene in particular and even becomes kind of an action heroine during the climax. It answered questions from the first film, but also had an unanswered question of "who was the first killer?" was off putting. It’s a slasher sequel, so you expect it to do the same basic things, but this movie wanders out of the horror realm and, for better and for worse, enters sci-fi territory. Once again, I think Jessica Rothe really shines in her role as Tree Gelbman. She truly does bring the fun and the heart to this story. However, much like the first film, the plot gets overly ridiculous near the end and loses focus of what it should be. So, yes, Happy Death Day 2U is another lesser slasher sequel, but it also features some genuinely amusing moments. See more Read all reviews
