All Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) has ever wanted is to be a professional hockey player. But he soon discovers he may actually have a talent for playing an entirely different sport: golf. When his grandmother (Frances Bay) learns she is about to lose her home, Happy joins a golf tournament to try and win enough money to buy it for her. It's the funniest golf send-up since Caddyshack. Part of the reason is that writer-actor Sandler has dropped that cloying falsetto and given himself some very funny lines.

As the front nine for Adam Sandler's eccentricities about expressing enragement, "Happy Gilmore" & all its punching is an easier sell to audiences than "Billy Madison's" oddities. But even as rougher edges are rounded off, it's still among Sandler's best.

Is the movie at times immature and features asinine dialogue. Yes, that's not in question, but it works. One of Adam Sandler's first 90's feature films stands out mainly for its charm, good timing, and an overall positive, populist message. Similar to Caddyshack's premise, which pits the status quo against outsiders. Happy Gilmore features Sandler portraying the titular character in an attempt to prove himself in a sport that is not used to his in-your-face and crass personality. Gilmore (Sandler) works tirelessly not only to prove himself but also to remain a staunch defender of his Grandmother. Is it for everyone? No. But what makes the film so memorable is its superb cast, which complements each other, its charming dialogue, and its timing, which make the movie a success. Highly recommend.
