I’d somehow never seen it, which shocked basically everyone I’ve ever talked to, so my expectations were sky high. Luckily, it delivers. The cast is stacked and every performance hits. What I loved most is how it balances being a gripping crime thriller while also diving deep into the personal lives of both the criminals and the cops. It makes everything feel more real and raises the emotional stakes. The nearly three-hour runtime flew by—I was locked in the whole time. It’s intense, smart, and surprisingly human. Definitely one of those films that sticks with you after the credits roll. The famous shootout is still one of the best ever filmed, but what really lasts are the conversations, the silences, and the sense that hunter and hunted are defined by the same loneliness and discipline. Pacino brings wild energy, De Niro brings icy control, and Mann knows exactly how to use both. Long, yes, but never empty.
