If you try to take these characters and situations literally, Her Private Hell is tough sledding; if you start looking at them as free-floating genre signifiers, the film becomes considerably more absorbing.

There is no middle ground. You’ll either love or hate Refn’s psychosexual thriller with a giallo aesthetic. One thing we can all agree on is the terrific score by 70s maestro Pino Donaggio, known for his work with Dario Argento and Brian De Palma.

Beautiful to look at but that’s about it. Would be better as a music video. All style no substance. Too bad I was hoping I was going to like it.

Absolutely insane in every way possible. This is without a doubt one of the most inaccessible movies to ever be released in mainstream cinemas and therefore it should be celebrated. I’m well aware that this will not be for everyone, but if you are a fan of Nicolas Winding Refn, this is a must watch. Not a perfect movie by any means but truly a one of a kind experience.
