Amy W @Amejame Jul 10 I LOVED this movie. The woman lives in a crowded house with 2 large, boisterous teenage boys and her husband. She loves her family, but she has no personal space in her home. She starts to spend time alone in the apartment of another woman, a poet/writer who is incarcerated for murdering a lover. The apartment is absolutely charming with books, plants, quietude. She spends time reading, wearing the nicer clothes, perfumes, makeup of the apartment owner. The building is divine, there is a piano in the background, the colors are warm. The light coming in the windows is spectacular, inviting. It's the perfect little haven of solitude, peace. I feel the director or set designer read my mind, then constructed the perfect "woman" apartment. Cozy, wood, retro, comfort furnishings and everything you need to stay in. The story otherwise is slow and not much happens. But I didn't care. In the vein of Virginia Woolf's 'A Room of One's Own,' it explores space and voice in women's liberation, through the lens of class and familial differences between two women. Writer Georgina has explosive and self-righteous voice, shooting her lover and writing a book while minimally detained for shooting him. Secretary Mercedes continually fails to speak up for herself at home-where her husband and sons expect her to clean up after them and do all the domestic chores-though she appears to be the main source of family income. Through her access to elite legal spaces at work, Mercedes gains access to the elite evacuated apartment of Georgina. But only as an imposter. Elisa Zulueta beautifully conveys Mercedes's mixture of emotions from enjoyment, to simultaneous judgement and admiration of Georgina, to protectiveness, etc. All while maintaining Mercedes's tendency to silence. The music, the acting, set decoration and costume design, all perfecto! The yearning of the main character for the glamorous life that has evaded her, despite her brains and talent. It was spellbinding and reminded me of a wonderful short story by Jane Bowles about a woman who checked into a Manhattan hotel, just to be alone and drink cocoa. See more Read all reviews
