It is the first year of Germany's occupation of France. Allied officer Lt. Aldo Raine assembles a team of Jewish soldiers to commit violent acts of retribution against the Nazis, including the taking of their scalps. He and his men join forces with Bridget von Hammersmark, a German actress and undercover agent, to bring down the leaders of the Third Reich. The performance of Christoph Waltz, playing the Nazi Gestapo figure Col. Hans Landa, is the highlight of the film. His ability to convey courtliness and sympathy and then go to commit the cruelest of horrors is simply superb.

Inglourious Basterds is an absolute must-see because Quentin Tarantino makes dialogue feel like action. The opening farmhouse sequence, the tavern scene, and the restaurant meeting are built out of words, pauses, language shifts, and power games, but they are as tense as any shootout. Christoph Waltz is extraordinary as Hans Landa. He is charming, polite, funny, patient, and terrifying, creating one of Tarantino’s greatest characters. Mélanie Laurent gives the movie its emotional core as Shosanna, playing her grief and fury with quiet control, while Brad Pitt gives Aldo Raine hilarious pulpy swagger. The film is original, violent, funny, suspenseful, and formally bold, with multiple languages, shifting identities, and major characters who never feel safe. The alternate-history finale is unforgettable because cinema itself becomes the weapon of revenge. It is one of Tarantino’s best films and one of the best films of its era.

A very stylish "Tarantino style" film. A cool double story line that all emerges as one in the latter stages. Touches on deep historical matter that ends in vindication. Great watch.
