Following the death of their parents, Lee (Ashley Judd) adopts her nieces, Imogen (Katie Douglas) and Maeve (Sarah Pidgeon), and raises them in a remote cabin as a deadly pandemic rages on around them. For over 10 years, the girls are raised to never leave the woods, avoid any and all interaction with outsiders, and ultimately rely on Lee as their only connection to the outside world. Lee has convinced the girls this is the key to survival in what is now an infectious and violent world. But when Imogen and Maeve discover an injured man in the nearby woods, Lee's absolute control begins to disintegrate as their faith in her, and everything they've ever known, begins to unravel.

Writer-director Alex Tibaldi takes a rather over-serious approach that occasionally begins to feel a bit corny. But the story is involving and thought-provoking in some surprisingly resonant ways, because it's easy to identify with the characters.

It’s not hard to see why Judd might want to take a crack at playing Lee, a woman bound by duty in self-destructive times, but her efforts don’t amount to much under the film’s deflating conditions.

The story was bland and the atmosphere the movie tried to set wasn't great. Overall I had fun watching it, but it's not the best post-apocalyptic movie I've seen.

Seen very similar plots in recent years, only this one with the added dynamic of an injured young man in the woods who needs to be fixed and taken care of by two sisters and their mother... other than that, it doesn’t really turn any new gears in the first half. Things do pick up briefly in the second half with some added conflict and complexity before an end that isn’t new or surprising.
