I think there are four continuities going on in this series? If I recall correctly? Nothing unusual for this type of franchise, but still kind of wild, considering how deliberately grounded the original story was. This one really worked for me—even though the origin story is a bit convoluted (and the protagonist's face is largely kept out of sight)—simply because it plays with themes I find genuinely unsettling and fascinating. They make "Bubba" seem like an introverted kind of cool kid completely changing that he is mentally challenged. So why did they make this movie and not care about the backstory or the characters or anything? Money, money talks so they can keep coming up with sh$t sequels. Just skip this one if you're a true fan.
