Dominic S @RT85320758 4d A film that takes a true, logical and honest approach to mental health. It brings a very grounded and realistic viewpoint of life through the eyes of various characters. It is very well directed and acted and I'm always so happy to see indie films like this getting the recognition they deserve. This one is definitely worth your time go check it out! Writer-director Glenn Garrabrant presents a poignant, intelligent, thoroughly honest drama about a young man who, after two suicide attempts, finds himself in a residential mental hospital with the chance to be able to leave for a day once a week in order to visit with loved ones. His time with his friends primarily consists of gaming together without use of the Internet - that is, connecting through the turn-of-the-millennium-era local area network, one of several meanings behind the film's title. His relationships with old college friends, his father, and his ex-wife are all depicted in deeply moving and, in some cases, startling moments that successfully (and admiringly) steer clear of the flamboyant and melodramatic. There are no "big scenes" to serve as potential Oscar clips filled with hysterical outbursts. In Garrabrant's skilled hands, rather, the storytelling style is the epitome of the expression "less is more." Dignified and tasteful. The film understands that healing isn't a solitary journey, it becomes everyone’s. Driven by sharp writing and authentic performances, Local Area Network proves depression affects an entire support system. It avoids melodramatic tropes, showing that recovery rarely comes through grand gestures, but through ordinary moments shared with people who stay, listen, and show up.
