Amanda L Dec 1 It’s not often that we have the ability to personify the energetic fields that are the deepest and most powerful parts of our being. This ebullient and bittersweet story by the incomparable Nicola Rose follows a neurodivergent teen, Maggie, and her journey to realising the indescribable yet captivating process of letting others into your life--no matter how insecure or messy we feel. Like her debut feature, "Goodbye, Petrushka, the story world is comprised of a unique cast of characters that pull us in with wit and vulnerability. The dialogue is both reverent and hysterical, and it serves as a delightful sidekick to the spot-on visual and special effects this auteur director employs very successfully. She does not shy away from keeping life’s most courageous moments as they are: bold, heartbreaking, and necessary. A wonderful film for all ages. The movie gives viewers a chance to see the world through Maggie's eyes (a synesthete who experiences a world where sounds have vibrant colors and emotions take on unique shapes). It is a heartwarming and funny family-friendly coming-of-age story. The characters in the film are relatable and easy to connect with. If you've ever felt a bit out of sync with the world, this movie wraps around you like a comforting hug. Unfortunately, the writing was not great and some of the acting was stilted and not believable. The emotional, dramatic moments are balanced by some great, occasionally slightly dark, comedy. A strong cast, performing a strong story, given character-centered direction all make a relatively unknown condition very relatable. Teen angst, family dynamics, and neighborhood hijinks are a worthy combination. Break out the popcorn and prepare to have a great movie night. (Buy extra popcorn; you'll want to watch it again.)
