Tennis instructor Chris Wilton (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) grows friendly with Tom Hewett (Matthew Goode), a wealthy student who shares an interest in opera. Invited to attend a performance with Tom, Chris meets the family and instantly attracts Tom's sister, Chloe (Emily Mortimer). Match Point is melodramatic, with the whole story turned on a set of unlikely and ludicrous eventualities, which Allen only too eager to call “luck”. The story makes almost zero sense, and it works neither as a drama-thriller, nor as a romance-comedy.

The movie gets you to root for it's undeserving protagonist through deft storytelling and solid performances. The climactic twist emphasizes Matchpoint's motto - sheer luck trumps all other factors.

I had high hopes for this one but was kind of disappointed because it was pretty predictable. The acting was decent but the plot tended to drone on a bit. I liked many Woody Allen movies (Sleeper was my favorite) and enjoyed his standup back in the day but this one wasn't up to his normal standards in my mind.

A favorite I have revisited several times. A treat for Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Scarlett Johansson fans (and who isn’t?) it is a gripping, if cynical, thriller. Beautifully shot in London, with all the intimacy and affection Allen has previously adorned on New York City.
