Mentally disabled champion fisher Albert Burroughs (Troy Garity) grows up under the protection of his possessive mother, Edna (Debra Monk), and gentle shopkeeper Sean (Bruce Dern). When Edna suddenly dies, word of Albert's inheritance and his winnings from fishing tournaments attracts unscrupulous types to his small Wisconsin town, including Jerry James (Randy Quaid), who claims to be the young man's father. Albert, who's smarter than he appears, must fend off everyone's designs on his money.

At first I didn't think I was going to buy into his character but really did after a while. I liked this movie. I thought the story was very original and the cast was pretty big for an independent film like this. It was refreshing to see Randy Quaid play a serious role that didn't make him look like a goofball like in Independence Day or Vegas Vacation. I laughed at the brief Josh Brolin appearance, I wonder how he feels about it given his recent stardom. I won't give it away, ok, I will. He was wearing a thong and some sort of garter belt. I am still trying to figure out what the hell that was all about. He was only in the movie for a few minutes, I really wonder how he, of all people, was chosen for that. Bruce Dern was solid as well. This kept my interest for the entire movie which more often than not equals a positive rating from me. If you get a chance you should watch this. All I could think of is this was a mini-Fargo.
