spoko S @spoko 6d The plot and character arcs are pretty predictable; it's a gambling movie. Gerry, in particular, is frustrating in the familiar ways, and not especially sympathetic. But he's not bad (and I'm enough of a Ben Mendelsohn fan), so that was fine. Ryan Reynolds is solid too; he's given an interesting character, and he delivers. Through the first act, he's almost unreal. But the stretch in St. Louis is a turning point for them both. As Gerry starts to waver, Curtis actually feels more solid. I also didn't mind the film's episodic structure; the recurring visual rhythms and consistent transitions between towns provided plenty of continuity. And the ending was well played; the choices made by the characters and filmmakers were surprising and effective. All in all, a win. See more Jordan E @JordanElgrably Mar 16 This was a slow burn, and a different turn from Ryan Reynolds (Curtis), who for once seemed a more authentic self—his typical flamboyance was turned down, and a better contrast, therefore, with the glum character played by Ben Mendelsohn (Gerry), who turns in a career-defining performance. You absolutely believed he was an inveterate gambler, ready to beg, borrow and steal, prepared to gamble away his own family for the chance to hit the big time. Even though the film appears to have a happy ending, you come away asking yourself, is it really? The hopeless gambler, the unrepentant addict, has so much to lose, and at the same time, nothing left. Both characters are hard to stop thinking about. I am requestioning my vices. See more Ann V @AMV_Louisiana Mar 4 Great movie - I love a good character driven film. It is more on the quiet and slow paced side- but that doesn’t bother me. It actually works very well. I don’t need to "flash" and "boom" every two minutes to keep my attention. There is also a very cute cat that didn’t get enough screen time. Joking. My cat was Ben Mendolson’s cat in the film. Ben is such a kind person and was very sweet to my very nervous kitty, Gingerman Franklin. We really enjoyed being on the set in New Orleans. Watch this gem of a movie and look for the orange cat! See more Jim H. @jimbofish Feb 14 It's really quite a quirky and richly complex psychological portrait of two codependent gambling types. The script is good with touches of sardonic humor here and there, and lots of twists. The acting is stellar. Mendelson has such nuanced facial expressions that it's like a script in and of itself just to watch his face. And of course Ryan is affable and somewhat unflappable. It's a very interesting movie.
