Tired of a world in which he no longer fits, deprived of those he loves who are disappearing one by one, Andrew Blake decides to leave the management of his small business to be hired as a butler in France, the country where he met his wife. By landing at the Beauvillier estate, where no one knows who he really is, he hopes to follow in the footsteps of his past. However, encounters and out-of-control situations will decide otherwise.... Between Nathalie, his widowed boss with a strange schedule, Odile, the cook and her explosive problems, Manon, a young lost cleaning lady and Philippe, the well-struck manager who lives at the back of the park, Andrew will no longer have a choice. He who was looking for a way to end it all is going to be forced to start all over again....

Its goofiness works, some of the time, partly because of Malkovich’s French, which is fluent yet delivered in a halting drawl with an English/American accent so bad it’s almost good.

Delightful film. A touching story about people with real dialog, superb acting. No CGI or special effects needed. This is the kind of story Hollywood used to do, Not so much anymore. Go see it and don't let the subtitles put you off. Malkovich at his best.

Maybe film critics have a deep desire to be controversial even if it means canning a charming and entertaining film. Or perhaps they just don't 'get it'. Either way, the so called experts who give this film less than 4 stars should reconsider their chosen profession because they have zero credibility amongst audiences who understand at least some of the nuances of French humour and delight in a couple of hours of harmless amusing funny entertainment that doesn't seek to be anything more.

This is a great movie! Loved it! They don't make movies like this one very often. Delightful and funny. You will leave the theater happy and wish you could be a part of their group. Malkovich was, per usual, outstanding!

Synopsis
