Ignacio (Jack Black), or Nacho to his friends, works as a cook in the Mexican monastery where he grew up. The monastery is home to a host of orphans whom Nacho cares for deeply, but there is not much money to feed them properly. Nacho decides to raise money for the children by moonlighting as a Lucha Libre wrestler with his partner Esqueleto (Héctor Jiménez), but since the church forbids Lucha, Nacho must disguise his identity.

Critics Consensus

At times hilarious, but other times offensive, Director Jared Hess is unable to recapture the collective charisma of his Napoleon characters, instead relying on a one-joke concept that runs out of steam. Sure to entertain the adolescents, however.

This movie was so corny and unwatchable....I had to sit in my own house to watch it for my buddy's birthday, as I cried through every scene because of the embarrassment Jack Black went through to make this movie. Then my other friend starts laughing at the most unfunny scenes, then looks at me for approval. I hope they never make another movie like this again.

"Nacho Libre" remains solid, but unfortunately never quite reaches the heights of "Napoleon Dynamite". While I was watching this film I frequently found myself wishing I was watching "Napoleon Dynamite" instead. While "Napoleon Dynamite" has memorable characters and dozens upon dozens of amusing quotes, most of the ensemble here are rather one note, and only a few lines are worth quoting. The jokes are rather hit or miss, despite the best efforts of Jack Black. Perhaps it is unjust to compare this film to "Napoleon Dynamite" as I have done, but one cannot help but remember what Jared Hess is capable of, and how "Nacho Libre" ultimately pales in comparison.
