That gives the movie glamour, fashion, celebrity culture, security challenges, and a different high-society playground than the Vegas casinos. The cast is easily the biggest strength. Sandra Bullock brings calm, clever confidence as Debbie Ocean, while Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Awkwafina, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, and Helena Bonham Carter help make the crew fun to watch. Anne Hathaway is especially funny and self-aware as Daphne Kluger. The movie is breezy, attractive, and easy to enjoy, but it lacks the rhythmic snap and effortless cool of Soderbergh’s trilogy. It has style, but not the same visual playfulness, and the heist feels too easy, with too little danger or complication. There is plenty to like, but Ocean’s 8 is more pleasant than thrilling. It also has a smooth, fashionable tone that fits the franchise’s identity, even if it doesn’t break new ground.
