Ola G @Ollie1972 Jan 7 I was a bit sceptical to "Once Upon a Time in Venice" due to the fact that Bruce Willis managed to do so many low performing films before his unfortunate retirement. But, I did actually enjoy it, even if there’s clear flaws for sure like the silly nude skateboard scene and the underlying predictability. There’s a slight touch of the better days in Mr. Willis career if you ask me. This crime comedy film has stable direction, several funny moments, a Bruce Willis with that classic smirk as the Los Angeles private detective Steve Ford, a slightly annoying Thomas Middleditch as Steves´s assistant John, an intimidating Jason Momoa as the drug lord Spyder and a solid John Goodman as Steve’s best friend Dave. Mainly because there is such good talent here. Huge fan, but it's just awful. Jason Mamoa, huge fan, but totally miscast. Bruce Willis and John Goodman, lifelong friends should have teamed up in something else years ago. To be fair, I am only 20 minutes into it and maybe something will change, but it's just terrible and I would be surprised if I finish it. So far, I want my 20 minutes of my life back. I guess I keep watching because of the talent that keeps popping up. The script must have been a good read. It just didn't transfer to the screen. Little lack of effort with the acting but it wasn’t terrible. I’ll be a fan of anything Bruce does. I knew going in that it was going to be not his best work, but there were some laughable moments. Maybe a 3.5, but a one star? Give me a break. Bruce Willis’s film, Once Upon a Time in Venice is one of the movies that falls into the decent category of that year. A drug Lord named Spider (Jason Mamoa) kidnaps a grown man’s dog. And once that happens The man named, Steve Ford (Bruce Willis) sets out to get his dog back by no means necessary. With star John Goodman in the movie I was even more excited to see this movie, as he’s an actor who I grew up watching from my childhood. Some of the scenes are a bit sleazy and at times a bit cheesy, but there were a few good scenes in this movie and the story is a good one. Certain scenes even made me laugh, like the one where Steve is skateboarding naked in the street in order to get away from a group of guys. And a scene where he gets pulled over by a police officer and hides his hand gun from him by putting it between his butt-cheeks. This movie is definitely overlooked by a lot of movie lovers and movie buffs and as an amateur film critic and movie buff myself I really do encourage everyone to give this movie another try.
