A struggling comedy writer, fresh from breaking up with his boyfriend, moves to Sacramento to help his sick mother. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, many of which are intermingled with sob-out-loud moments. It helps greatly that first-time director Chris Kelly maintains a low-key, naturalistic vibe throughout.

Other People is gentle, heartfelt, and of a delicate build. Kelly's best observations are small but true: the touching banality of a bad pop song, and that "other people" is in fact most people, if you're paying attention.

While a slow-burner, Kelly's comedic pedigree ensures for a sharply written film in which laugh-out-loud comedy softens the heavy blows of heartstring plucking. The term "black comedy" was invented for films like this, especially when executed so well.

Que filme lindo, que filme triste, retrata todas as mazelas da vida de uma pessoa bizarramente triste é momentaneamente disfuncional, deu uma dor sentir a dor do protagonista, que passa o filme inteira perdendo, a mãe, o namorado, um emprego que nunca conquistou, é sobre dores e perdas, doeu aqui... This movie is nothing but depressing. Critics laud the humor points, but I saw none. I saw solid comedic actors playing horrifically depressing roles. No laughs. No smiles. Just heartbreak. This movie could have offered some balance. There was none. You had better be in a good mood if you decide to take this horror story on.
