In 1944 in Spain, Ofelia and her ailing mother arrive at the post of her mother's new husband, a sadistic army officer who is trying to quell a guerrilla uprising. Compelling story, good sound track and effective interweaving of real and imaginary worlds and characters. Story and visuals both very dark - the dark picture was welcome during several episodes of violence. The adults don't have much backstory, but since we are seeing most of this through the eyes of a child, that is appropriate. It was interesting that, although I don't really speak Spanish, by the end scenes I had stopped noticing the subtitles and was hearing the English in my mind as though it was spoken. Can't remember that ever happening before.
