Paul S @PManRager Jul 13 Gladiator meets 2012 in this lackluster yet enjoyable flick. The characters lacked depth, and the writing felt incredibly bland and one-dimensional. Despite this movie's flaws, the visuals were really impressive, and there were plenty of intense action sequences that left me entertained. I definitely recommend this for action, history, and disaster movie fans! See more Paul O @pjkeys Jul 4 Action packed and well paced with almost never a dull moment. The special effects were excellent and the plot was well conceived. A good plot that is difficult to find holes in like "well, why didn't he do this?" or "didn't they see this coming?". The main characters were very likable while the villains were easy to hate. See more Margaret T @Margaret47 Jun 27 I don't expect disaster movies to be art, but this is just a really badly-made film. Weird pacing, ugly / confusing shots, clichés that were tired 40 years ago, characters doing inexplicable things. (Lets chill and drink some water in this burning building that's collapsing on top of us! We're being chased by Romans and giant fireballs but let's all split up while I go get some horses -- no of COURSE we can't just run to the horses TOGETHER that would be CRAZY.) Kit Harrington just sort of glowers at everything, and the only expressive thing about Emily Browning is her skin. Meanwhile the film features not one but two magical negroes, both eager to make big sacrifices for our dull lilywhite leads, which sucks because they're the only two bright spots in the movie. The eruption has its moments, but movie disasters only work if you believe they're impacting a real universe, and this never stops looking like sets and CGI. It did drag a little for the first hour or so, but within that hour it was filled with great plot, and further representation of Rome.
