Critics Consensus

The Prince of Egypt's stunning visuals and first-rate voice cast more than compensate for the fact that it's better crafted than it is emotionally involving.

Well-told story that's careful not to offend. Go to Full Review

The movie's proudest accomplishment is that it revises our version of Moses toward something more immediate and believable, more humanly knowable. Go to Full Review

This is sensational cinema: crowds swarming among pyramids in eye-popping 3-D, camerawork that's distinctly Spielbergian in its fluidity. Go to Full Review

“Prince of Egypt” is a failure in major areas, but is breathtaking in others. It is a good start for DreamWorks, but they’ll have to try harder to eclipse the Mouse House. Go to Full Review

The Prince of Egypt may have beautiful animation and music but in retelling the story of the Exodus, they get part of it wrong. Go to Full Review

Karen May 18 Soooo good! Would definitely re-watch it in theaters. See more Christian M @chriss17eu 1d Neither musicals nor animation usually appeal to me, though I still wanted to revisit this film with a more mature perspective. From the beginning, its idea of being born with a predetermined purpose already felt unsettling to me. Visually, the egyptian setting is convincing, but the narrative raises issues, especially for a children’s film: scenes of women treated like trophies or Moses raising his hand against his sister feel uncomfortable given the young audience. The humor and songs also distance me from the experience, since the music constantly interrupts the story while reducing potentially powerful themes to simple melodies. Moses is charismatic but emotionally distant, while Miriam feels far more human and relatable. The divine plagues are visually impressive, particularly the deadly mist sequence, which reinforces my view that God is portrayed without morality or distinction between innocent and guilty. See more Cenny 4 @KenTan 1d As a non-Christian, this movie is educational and engaging. I learnt loads about Moses story, and I definitely was fully immersed in the story. I loved every character and their unique motivations and actions, and I really loved the villain in this movie. Rameses was written beautifully imo. I can sympathize with his actions from the start to end, and I liked how they showcased his conflicting emotions. While he still loved his brother, he had to uphold the duty he was bestowed by his father and his ancestors, and this 2 contrasting motivations really tortured and tore him apart. Only at the end where his son was killed by Moses where he finally snapped and swore carnage upon Moses and ‘his kind’. I’m amazed at how well crafted the villain is, and I thoroughly enjoyed this show. Would watch it again! And definitely recommend this to non-Christian folks as well See more Curtis P @WastedTundra22 May 4 My most favorite animated film ever! Possibly my most favorite FILM ever. The score is brilliant and the animation is breathtaking. Would rate 6 stars if I could. An absolute must-see for anyone who has eyes.
