Benjamin W. @Code70 May 14 An ambitious, messy entry in the Alien franchise. Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is a bit of an odd film. It tried to tackle really philosophical and existential questions while being an entertaining sci-fi adventure, and I just don’t think it really accomplishes either. As far as the positives go, the movie looks incredible. It’s shot beautifully, has great effects, and it kinda has this prestige feel about it. Also, the cast was pretty terrific. Idris Elba and Michael Fassbender were standouts. But, the film tries to tackle such themes as Creation, and what if it turns out our creator hated us, and what would that mean for humanity as a whole? The implications of that are rather troubling, and I just think it utterly fails at properly answering and pondering these ideas. It’s not a horrible film. It’s well-directed and looks great, and can be interesting at times. But for what it’s going for, I think, for the most part, it doesn’t quite accomplish. See more Mary F. @RT70986907 Apr 22 I don't buy many films for my permanent collection, but I purchased both Prometheus and Covenant as I've watched them so often. The film is stunning to look at, and the narrative is solid from start to finish, complete with very human and flawed characters played to perfection by the cast. And I love that Scott made a film that takes on such heady philosophical questions. There's just no other director like him, and he just keeps going. He made Prometheus in his mid 70s, and now, at 88, he is directing another huge sci-fi epic with Jacob Elordi, due in August, and yes, in development is yet another Alien film. May he live forever. See more Ed D @Ed123daze Apr 12 Disappointing given the cast and storyline. Just the lack of attention to detail that made the film ( what I watched of it ) sloppy! If they are going to go to the level of having a spaceship travel to a different galaxy and solar system where people are sustained for months in these ‘pods’ then at least make the rest of it up to scratch. In the opening scene the archaeologists look like they are fresh out of a mountain warehouse store! Please! With big chunky torches in 2089!!! No special tech! Don’t even get me started on what they find! Nothing new or original that hasn’t already been speculated upon but how it prompted them to go to a different planet and conclude they are our makers I will never know. The unnecessary love scene between the archaeologists. I think we worked out they was a couple thanks. Edris singing an 80’s song? Why? Do we sing songs from 1912 in 2012? Will chauvinistic behaviour still exist in 2093? I don’t think so! See more Tan C @TanZoi Apr 12 Without its ending, I might not have realized this was an Alien prequel at all. It plays more like an archaeological sci-fi thriller—an expedition into unknown ruins and an ancient race—driven less by explosive spectacle and more by a smooth, creeping escalation of dread. The film’s power lies in its atmosphere: sterile chambers, colossal relics, and a lifeless planet that together create a suffocating sense of the unknown, where each step forward feels more dangerous than the last. The characters are largely forgettable, except for David, who quietly becomes the film’s true center. As a human creation observing his creators, he gives tangible weight to themes of creation and mortality that might otherwise remain abstract. The plot itself is familiar—a doomed scientific mission undone by hubris—but its strength lies in execution rather than originality. And throughout, it evokes a persistent echo of At the Mountains of Madness. See more Read all reviews
