When car dealer Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) learns that his estranged father has died, he returns home to Cincinnati, where he discovers that he has an autistic older brother named Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) and that his father's $3 million fortune is being left to the mental institution in which Raymond lives. Motivated by his father's money, Charlie checks Raymond out of the facility in order to return with him to Los Angeles. The brothers' cross-country trip ends up changing both their lives.

Dustin Hoffman's portrayal of Raymond is light years away from the big lunk Lenny in Of Mice and Men or the deaf-mute girl in Johnny Belinda. It is, quite simply, the most memorable, impassioned performance of the year.

This movie is one of those that'll make you cry and laugh with an absolutely fabulous performance from Dustin Hoffman, wonderful film! Only thing: Tom Cruise's character is a jerk, and hard to like. :)

There's been a lot of talk about Dustin Hoffman's Oscar-winning performance, and it truly is an incredibly amazing performance that both irritates and moves you from beginning to end. However, Tom Cruise's portrayal of someone genuinely troubled and frustrated with a goal, and completely focused on it, deserves more attention. The two complement each other perfectly to deliver a marvelous work that deserved all its Oscars.

Filme mais ou menos, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são mais ou menos, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom, e a atuação do dusty Hoffman foi muito boa.
