The ending is saddening but makes sense, the only thing that really irritated me was that Jimmy (Tom E Lewis) let Cooper (Ryan Kwanten) live multiple times and the little twerp still couldn't put two and two together until it was spelt out for him. What really annoyed me was that no one was capable of doing anything quietly! The bad guy could have been disposed of early on if people didn't fall over, trip over, knock stuff over, or just groan. Kwanten and Bisley both put in strong performances. Lewis was fantastic as the revengeful murderer, out to settle a score, with his one line of dialogue in the final minutes lending his character a Terminator type quality. It was well paced, but had moments of clichéd Wild West elements that didn't quite work. I'd still recommend it though. See more ronald h @RT44372985 09/24/2021 The Australian western / thriller "Red Hill" is so loaded with clichés, at first I thought it was a satire: 1) A new, idealistic young cop (with a beautiful pregnant wife) comes to a small town and has to deal with the grizzled old sheriff, who is not afraid to bend the rules to implement his own vigilantism. 2) An escaped convict returns to the town to kill everybody who testified against him. 3) Lots of horses. 4) Lots of grisly violence. 5) Lots more horses. 6) Lots more violence. It's pure action, with virtually no character development. But the production values and acting are actually quite good. Ryan Kwanten plays Shane, the new cop in town. Steve Bisley devours the scenery as Old Bill the police chief (a poke at the British?), who has an agenda that doesn't become clear until the final act. The convict, Jimmy, is played by Tommy Lewis, with his face half-scarred by burns (we don't find out why until the last minutes of the film). He is totally mute until the end, when he says a final few words. All three performances are good enough to make you forgive the clichés and follow the story, thin as it may be. This may also be the first movie to feature a murder using a boomerang. I ultimately decided that there was a bit of a satirical element here, but the movie plays it straight for the most part. Not that there isn't any story (and backstory); there's just not a lot to it. But action fans will be impressed. See more Read all reviews
