A deadly virus from a secret Umbrella Corporation laboratory underneath Raccoon City is exposed to the world. Umbrella seals off the city to contain the virus, creating a ghost town where everyone trapped inside turns into a mutant zombie. Alice (Milla Jovovich), a survivor from Umbrella's secret lab, meets former Umbrella security officer Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory) and mercenary Carlos Oliveira (Oded Fehr). Still not very Resident Evil, but more than the first. Whenever this movie was being a loose adaptation of Resident Evil: Nemesis it was enjoyable. But every time it started to do that it would hard pivot back to Alice who is trying way too hard to be cool and all the stuff from the first movie that I just don’t care about.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse fails to deliver meaningful character development. Characters are introduced, yet most remain one-dimensional, existing only to drive the action forward. The protagonist, Alice, shows minimal growth, and secondary characters are killed off in predictable and anticlimactic ways. The story relies heavily on exposition, underestimating the audience's ability to follow complex plots or engage with subtle storytelling. Dialogue is stiff and often feels forced, making emotional stakes difficult to care about. Despite high-energy action sequences and visually engaging effects, the lack of moral or cognitive distinction among the survivors makes the film feel shallow. Only a few characters momentarily hint at personality, such as Jill Valentine, whose screen presence is limited, and Nemesis, whose role is more menacing than meaningful. Overall, the film prioritizes spectacle over substance.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse has horrible direction and is poorly directed, but it has a charm in the action sequences that could save the film. Just its peculiar script that doesn't favor its characters.
