01/18/2017 Drama unfolding on the Sicilian island of Lampedusa. Some breathtaking landscape shots, but the film is strongest when depicting with Sicilian machismo and youth band violence, which feels authentic and can be quite shocking. Valeria Golino's strong performance and beauty carry much of the film. The second half slowly drifts off, losing narrative tightness and urgency in favour of a more symbolic, dreamlike mode. Thematic indebtedness to Roberto Rossellini's "Stromboli", starring Ingrid Bergman, is apparent in the clash of personal sensitivities and societal norms. Sie soll nach Mailand gebracht werden, damit ein Arzt ihr helfen kann. Grazia aber läuft davon und das Gerücht geht um, sie sei ertrunken im Meer. Zuvor reagierte man im dorf ausgesprochen wütend, weil Grazia eine alte Ruine aufbrach, in der Dutzende sträunender Hunde gefangen waren. Die Hunde rennen nun auf den Strassen umher. Die Männer steigen auf ihre Dächer, um die Hunde zu erschiessen. In diesem Moment wird der Beschluss gefasst, dass Grazia nach Mailand muss. Das Dorf liegt auf der Insel Lampedusa, im Süden Italiens, nicht weit von Tunesien. Im Grunde erleben wir im Film das Leben auf der Insel, bevor die sogenannte "Flüchtlings-Krise" über Lampedusa hereinbrach (der Film kam 2003 ins Kino). Fisch und Konservieren sind die lokalen Industrien. Jeder lebt vom anderen, ein Kreislauf. Wir sehen, wie die Sonne brennt auf eine Landschaft aus Fels und Sand, den endlosen Himmel und das Meer. Die Häuser im Dorf sind sandfarben, überall spielen Kinder und stehen Vespas herum. In dieser Welt ist Grazia (Valeria Golino) eine Legende. Sie sieht immer noch jung aus, obwohl sie Mutter dreier Kinder ist. Ihr Mann heisst Pietro (Vincenzo Amato), ein gutaussehender Fischer. Er versteht seine Frau, doch auch er reagiert verstört als er sie nackt beim Baden sieht mit den Kindern. Schliesslich ist es ihr Sohn Pasquale (Francesco Casisa), der verlangt, sie solle ihre Kleider wieder aufnehmen und nach Hause kommen. Pasquale versucht die Mutter zu beschützen. Ich denke, wir können sie als manisch depressiv beschreiben, wobei sie sich meistens im Zustand des wilden Ausbruchs befindet: Zu fröhlich, zu unkontrolliert, mit allzu heftiger Begeisterung. Der Film von Emanuele Crialese bietet nicht nur die Geschichte Grazias, sondern beweist ein feines Gespür für das Leben auf Lampedusa. Wir erleben genauso intensiv die Entwicklung ihrer Kinder, wie sie anfangen, erwachsen zu werden, zu flirten und die Liebe zu entdecken. Es ist deshalb umso trauriger, mit anzusehen, wie Grazia verschwindet (nicht ertrinkt, sondern davon läuft). Pasquale hilft ihr bei diesem Betrug während ihr zweiter Sohn Pietro am Strand trauert: Nicht unweit von Pietro versteckt sich Grazia in einer Grotte. Wie kann sie als Mutter etwas derart Herzloses tun? - Weil die den Arzt in Mailand wirklich braucht. Der Film folgt Grazia in ihre Welt und sieht nicht nur das Unvermeidbare (sie ist krank!), sondern auch das Poetische darin. Respiro ist dabei ein lebensbejahender Film geworden mit sehr viel Energie und starken Charakteren. Manchmal kommt es mir sogar so vor, als wird mentale Krankheit hier mehr als Unterhaltung, denn als Leid vorgeführt. Manchmal kamen mir auch Zweifel, ob solche Menschen wirklich auf Lampedusa leben? Womöglich existieren sie nur für die Länge des Films? Grazia braucht Hilfe, in dem Moment aber, da sie die bekommt, wäre Lampedusa nicht mehr so ein anziehender Ort zum Leben. Critics have described the film's simple, character-driven storyline as "very Italianesque", but for me this film has a haunting quality that transcends other recent Italian films and places it amongst the true gems of modern European cinema. The story revolves around Grazia (an enthralling Valeria Golino) who lives on a picturesque Italian fishing island. She's a beautiful free spirit, but is prone to rabid mood swings and highly erratic behavior. Her husband (Vicenzo Amato) is convinced she is mentally ill, and needs treatment in Milan, but her eldest son Pasquale (Francesco Casisa) is determined to protect her. There are several other sub plots, involving Pasquale's sister and her involvement with a local cop and gangs of troublesome boys on the beach, but essentially this is a film about Grazia seen through Pasquale's eyes. Having a young boy as the protagonist is fast becoming a trait of Italian cinema ("Cinema Paradiso", "Malena"), but none the less it works well here, perfectly capturing Pasquale divided between convention and his love for his mother. There is no denying Emanuele Crialese's talent. There are scenes of such haunting beauty throughout this film, captured with Fabio Zamarion's excellent cinematography. The sensuous beauty of Grazia and of the ocean are so alluring and captivating, they draw you into this vivid landscape. This film's ending has to be one of the most haunting scenes I've seen, brilliantly captured and teamed with John Surman's score. It will stay with you for days. See more 03/30/2012 Beautiful film! Extremely well shot, brilliantly acted by a bunch of non professional actors for the most part & incredibly poetic at times, this first feature from director Crialese is nailing it's subject from start till end, keeping you entetained & dreamy for the time it last!
