Claudio C @Claudio666 06/11/2025 Messy Screenplay (11,757 – 11 Jun 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) In Paris, the psychologist Sibyl (Virginie Efira) decides to write a new novel after many years without writing. She is a former alcoholic woman, who lives with her mate Etienne (Paul Hamy) and her two children from a former relationship. In order to dedicate herself to her book, she transfers her patients to her colleagues. Without inspiration, she receives the phone call of the new actress Margot Vasilis (Adèle Exarchopoulos), who is having a love affair with the actor Igor (Gaspard Ulliel) and she decides to keep Margot as client. Soon Margot gets pregnant, but Igor lives with Mika (Sandra Hüller), who is the director of the film they are working. While recalling her torrid romance with her former lover Gabriel (Niels Schneider), Sibyl writes her novel using Margot’s troubled life. When Margot takes a decision about her baby, Igor calls Sibyl and she travels to Stromboli to help Margot, and she ends up helping Mika to make her film. But after having one night stand with Igor, Mika sends her back to Paris and Sibyl begins to drink again. “Sibyl” (2019) is a French-Belgium film by Justine Triet with the lovely Virginie Efira in the lead role. I like French movies very much and I had great expectations with Sibyl, but unfortunately the screenplay is a mess, alternating flashbacks and present situations without distinction. The dramatic storyline of a psychologist that decides to write a novel using the real case of a client is an unethical practice of this profession. The sex scenes are very torrid. My vote is five. Title (Brazil): “Sibyl" See more Cindy A @CindyK 06/01/2024 Someone wrote a review saying that you shouldn't watch this movie unless you're familiar with French films. Don't get too close to this, I think it said. I think that's fair. However, I think if you understand and enjoy French farces and humor, this is a subtle contemporary take on one. There's also really excellent acting by Adele Exarchopoulos, and Virginie Efira is really compelling to watch. There's also some borderline soft porn sex scenes, in case you were going to watch this with kids in the next room or something. I had tried to watch the French comedy Fear City --and to turn it off and watched this instead which gave me lots of opportunity to laugh and say to no one "what is she doing???" Oh and Sandra Huller just steals all the scenes she's in. Sibyl was the first and I won't get to another until I re-screen this 2019 feature that she also wrote and directed, because it's left a trance over me that I can't quite shake off yet. Sibyl's flash backs to her previous lover and excessive sex scenes don't do much to explain anything really. It's all over the place and immensely boring.
